At age 10 I started dancing at a nearby competitive dance studio in New York. What was once a one day a week, one hour class, quickly became an obsession. I loved the constant movement and adrenaline rush of being a dancer both on and off the stage. By the following year I was already enrolled in all forms of dancing, hip hop, ballet, tap, lyrical, jazz and pointe.
In my late 20's I stopped taking classes and instead began instructing dance classes. To keep myself in shape i decided to enroll in a local gym. I began seeing my body change I wasnt so thin anymore and my muscle definition was begining to become visible! As a dance instructor of children I became friendly with the mothers of my students. I remember a mother asking me if I was a personal trainer or if I taught classes for adults. As the years went on i was asked more and more by women my age or older how I keep fit and what they can do to become fit.
At the age of 30 I decided to leave the dance world and take on group fitness. I quickly was offered to instruct fitness classes in various gyms and dance studio's in New York. My following became large, and my students became addicted.
At the age of 35 I decided to take my love of fitness to an entirely new, competitive level. On April 12th of 2013 I took part in my very first bodybuilding fitness competition where I placed 2nd in the bikini division. My desire after placing second in bikini was to become stronger and have a more muscular physique. My focus was to develope a body good enough to compete in the figure division, the next division up from bikini. My drive to get where I wanted to be was INTENSE. In November of 2013 I competed for the first time in New York City at one of the largest NPC competitions on the eastern coast with over 440 competitors . It was then that I took the stage for the first time as a figure competitor . In this division a woman hold more noticeable muscle, lean but still sexy, shoulders capped and abs defined. I was excited, fearful, adrenalized, happy and nervous all at the same time. There was competition and the competition was good that day. The finals came an I got call out! I remember I did a double take at the number on my suit. I couldnt believe I placed 3rd ! Not only did i commit to a goal of transforming my physique but I was a 3rd place winner.
I put in work, alot of hard work during off season. The year 2014 came quickly. I had made a promise to a good friend of mine who had the same interest as me in fitness that when she competes I would compete with her making it easier to keep physically and mentally motivated because we would be doing it together. She was registered to compete in April. I knew how unprepared I was . It was already February and it didnt leave me much time to prep, but I knew I made a promise to her. i also knew it was possible, with dedication and hard work, anything is possible. I did what needed to be done and stepped on stage April 12th, 2014 at the Tribeca Performing Arts center in New York city. I say it to my students and my clients everyday and I will say it to you, commitment is key. I won my class that day. It was an honor to place 1st, but I knew how hard I worked to get on top. Don't ever give up, even when your at your weakest point physically and mentally. your mind will lead your body to do great things and I promise you, one day you will find success. Just keep pushing.
There is no finish line. Fitness is what I do. I live my dream. I love my journey. Next stop, next stage..pro!
